Ok, back to the list of Sherwin-Williams top colors…

What Is The Difference Between Sherwin Williams Emerald And Duration?

Comparing the two, Emerald and Duration are both good paint options. With that said, Duration cures thicker on your walls, while Emerald has a closer, harder cure.

Emerald paint also tends to handle dirt better than Duration and won’t need to be wiped down as often. As we mentioned, Emerald also has better coverage than Duration, which will save you time and money on your home project.

Does Sherwin Williams Emerald Or Duration Dry Faster?

Both of these paints will dry relatively fast. Considering both Emerald and Duration are acrylic paints, expect them to be dry to the touch within four to six hours.

Duration paint might have a faster dry time due to its softer formula, which is something to think about.

What Sherwin-Williams Paint Experts Say

Sherwin-Williams paint specialists know about the differences between each grade better than anyone. So, I contacted several of these experts to get their opinions.

I asked two questions:

  • What’s the difference between each paint grade?
  • Is there one you recommend the most for interior and exterior?

The paint specialist at the Sherwin-Williams store in Mansfield, Massachusetts, provided a complete rundown of the options.

She said, “Emerald Designer Edition is the top-of-the-line interior paint. It comes in 200 colors and offers excellent one-coat coverage. The regular Emerald line comes in all colors, excluding the Designer palette, but has the same durability.

“Duration is one step down from Emerald. It’s thicker than Emerald, and some people say it provides a better finish, but it all depends on the viscosity you’re used to. Emerald is easier to apply and clean out of brushes and rollers.

“SuperPaint and Cashmere are on the same level. They’re basic, trusted paint and primers. However, Cashmere provides the best overall look. It has a buttery finish and won’t feel gritty like other paints. The one advantage of SuperPaint is that it’s more washable than Cashmere.

“Captivate is our low-cost paint. It’s a paint and primer like the others, but you’ll likely need an extra coat. If you’re covering the same or similar colors, it’s perfectly fine. But if you’re painting over a totally different color, it can be frustrating.”

When I asked about exterior paints, she said, “Resilience is being phased out. Latitude is a new and improved formula that’s replacing Resilience. For winter application, Latitude is the best option. You can apply it in temperatures as low as 35°F.”

When I asked which grade she recommends the most, she said, “Cashmere is the best value. It goes on so smoothly that it makes DIY jobs look professional. If you have kids or pets, you might need more washable paint like Duration or Emerald.”

I spoke with a paint specialist at the Sherwin-Williams store in Westborough, Massachusetts, to get a second opinion.

She said, “Emerald is the best quality paint line. It’s the easiest to clean, the most durable, and provides the best coverage. Duration is similar but thicker, so it can be more difficult to apply. Cashmere provides the best finish. SuperPaint is on the lower end. It’s similar to Cashmere but doesn’t look as smooth on the wall.”

Regarding the two exterior-only paints, she said, “Latitude is replacing Resilience, but both have excellent longevity and can withstand harsh weather conditions. They both dry fast, so they don’t get ruined if it rains or snows soon after you paint.”

When I asked which paint she recommends most often, she said, “If it’s within your budget, go for Emerald. It scores well in every category, including application, coverage, durability, washability, and mold resistance. The only downside is the price.”

How Much Does Sherwin Williams Exterior Paint Cost?

Super Paint

If you need a super paint for the exterior of your home, check out SuperPaint Exterior Acrylic Latex paint. It is an acrylic resin that is fade and weather resistant. It comes in flat, low luster, satin, gloss, and high gloss sheens. Exterior Super Paint costs $63.49 per gallon.

Emerald

Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex paint is the same high-end, high-quality paint, but for the outside of your house. It is self-priming, and weather and fade resistant. It is available in flat, gloss, and satin sheens. This exterior paint costs $85.99 per gallon.

Duration

The Duration Exterior Acrylic Latex paint is designed to go the distance! The website claims just one coat will do the trick for repaint jobs. It comes in flat, low luster, satin, and gloss sheen finishes. It costs $80.99 per gallon.

Resilience

Resilience Exterior Acrylic Latex paint is designed for all outdoor surfaces, including wood, vinyl, aluminum, masonry, and metal. It is moisture-resistant, and can be applied in temperatures as low as 35 degrees Fahrenheit. It comes in flat, satin, and gloss sheen. The price per gallon is $73.49.

A-100

A-100 Exterior Acrylic Latex is a good value that still gets Sherwin Williams worthy reviews. This budget paint comes in flat, satin, low gloss, and low sheen finishes. It costs $49.49 per gallon.

FlexTemp

FlexTemp Exterior Acrylic Latex paint can be applied in temperatures from 35-120 degrees Fahrenheit. It resists fading, weathering, and flaking, and can be applied to vinyl. This paint comes in flat, satin, and gloss sheens. The price per gallon is $75.49.

SuperPaint

Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Interior

SuperPaint comes in two versions — interior and exterior — with two additional sub-varieties for interior paint. Like Emerald and Duration, SuperPaint is a paint and primer in one, saving you time and money.

Bob Vila named Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint the Best Overall Interior Paint. Besides its excellent finish quality and high resistance to wear, reviewers praised its excellent coverage and low odor.

SuperPaint comes in several different formulas.

SuperPaint Exterior Acrylic Latex is offered in a range of VinylSafe colors and is formulated to resist cracking, peeling, and fading. SuperPaint Exterior offers the most finish options of all Sherwin-Williams paint: Flat, Low Lustre, Satin, Gloss, and High Gloss.

SuperPaint Interior Acrylic Latex is a mid-range option priced at $70 a gallon. It’s less expensive than Emerald and Duration but more pricey than Captivate. This is a no-hassle and low-maintenance paint that holds up well to scrubbing.

SuperPaint Interior Acrylic with Air Purifying Technology claims to “improve indoor air quality.” But how does that actually work? Rick Watson, Sherwin-Williams’ product information and technical services director, says the paint “helps transform airborne VOCs into water molecules and harmless inert gas. As for reducing household odors, the paint’s technology deconstructs carbon molecules, neutralizing and dissipating odors.”

SuperPaint Interior Latex with Sanitizing Technology prevents the spread of bacteria on the walls. Lab tests proved that it kills 99.9% of Staph, E. coli, MRSA, VRE, and Enterobacter aerogenes within the first two hours. This paint is ideal for kitchen and bathroom walls, home gyms, and other areas where bacteria could be present.

Sherwin williams duration vs superpaint reddit

If you’re considering repainting your home, you may be wondering which paint is the better option: Sherwin Williams Duration or Superpaint? Both paints are high-quality and will provide a beautiful finish, but there are some key differences between the two.

Sherwin Williams Duration is a water-based acrylic paint that is designed for high-traffic areas. It is resistant to staining and fading, and it has a durable finish that will withstand wear and tear.

Sherwin Williams Tradewind Compared to Other Paint Colors

When people are selecting paint colors, they tend to be comparing the shades they are considering to other shades in the same color family.

Many people who are considering painting their space Tradewind are also considering Sea Salt and Rainwashed.

So, let’s compare Tradewind with Sea Salt and Rainwashed and see white one might be better for your home.

Sherwin Williams Tradewind vs. Sea Salt

Sea Salt is a very popular Sherwin Williams paint color. It rose to its highest popularity with the show Fixer Upper, as it was one of the the quintessential blue green paint colors that Joanna Gaines seemed to use so frequently.

But, Sea Salt isn’t only for those who love the modern farmhouse look. In fact, Sea Salt has long been a favorite for bedrooms and bathrooms due to its soft, spa-like appearance.

Sea Salt is a much greener paint color than Tradewind.

Sea Salt is a blue-green blend with gray undertones. The gray in Sea Salt makes it come across like a neutral at times.

It is one of those chameleon types of paint colors that can look blue in some lights, green in others, and gray in others. It can even look all these things at the same time in the same room.

Sea Salt and Tradewind have very similar LRVs, so one isn’t really darker than the other.

If you’re looking for a greener paint color, Sea Salt is going to be the pick here. But, if you want a blue paint color, Tradewind wins.

Sherwin Williams Tradewind vs. Rainwashed

Rainwashed is another popular blue-green paint color with gray undertones by Sherwin Williams.

Like Sea Salt, Rainwashed has a lot more green in it than Tradewind does. It doesn’t have as much as Sea Salt, but Rainwashed is a true blue-green paint color. This is in contrast to Tradewind, which is a green paint color with a hint of green in its undertones.

Again, Rainwashed and Tradewind have similar LRVs. One won’t have more depth on the wall than the other.

If you like Tradewind, but prefer more of a true blue-green, Rainwashed is the better bet.

Is Sherwin Williams Duration Worth It?

We think it is worth it! Whether you choose their interior or exterior paint, the Duration formula and quality have stood the test of time for nearly 20 years.

Of course, Sherwin Williams has adapted this line and created other options, but Duration will always be the blueprint of two in one paint and primer.

Is Duration Better Than Sherwin Williams SuperPaint?

Quality-wise, we would recommend Duration over SuperPaint. One of the main differences is that Duration paint covers more surfaces, including aluminum, vinyl, steel, and wood siding/trim.

The Duration line also tends to last longer versus SuperPaint but does cost about $20 more per gallon with an average price tag of $70.

Exploring Sherwin Williams Duration vs Emerald Features

Even though Sherwin Williams makes both Duration vs Emerald, the two paints perform differently. Let’s have a deep dive into the different features of both these paints and how they compare to each other.

Number of coats required

Paint technology has come on leaps and bounds, and many paints now require a limited number of coats to achieve good coverage and finish.

How many coats you require depends on several factors, including the paint you use, the material you are painting, and what color you are painting over.

Emerald provides a high level of coverage. If you are painting over a similar color or going from a light to a darker shade, you can often get away with one coat. This isn’t true all of the time; however, Emerald is very efficient, and you often use less product than you usually would with other paints.

Duration generally requires more than one coat to achieve a satisfactory finish. It doesn’t cover as well as Emerald, and you will likely need to spend more time applying more than one coat to the material you are painting.

Another thing to mention is that Emerald is zero-VOC which means that it won’t smell or give off much odor when painting.

Flexibility

The paint that you choose can heavily depend on the area of your home that you will apply it to. For example, painting the bathroom with its constant temperature changes will often dictate what type of paint you choose.

Duration is a better choice if you paint a room with significant temperature shifts as it has a softer film and high moisture resistance. The Duration paint is also thicker, making it more flexible, meaning you can use it in different areas, especially those that experience temperature changes regularly.

Emerald isn’t as suited to painting rooms such as a bathroom or a laundry room where the temperature will change rapidly. If you are going to use Emerald in an area that can go from hot to cold quickly and often, you might need to apply additional coats to ensure it retains its superior finish.

Cleaning

Regardless of the material of your painted surface, dirt, grime, and marks can appear over time. So, you need paint that you can easily clean without impacting the aesthetic or requiring you to touch it up after a quick wipe.

Emerald paint provides a high level of resistance to picking up dirt and other imperfections. It cures tighter and harder than Duration, so this means that dirt and marks won’t show up as easily. Another feature of Emerald paint is cross-linking technology, which helps prevent peeling and increases its durability and ease of cleaning.

Duration doesn’t do as good a job at preventing dirt and marks from appearing. You can still clean spots and dirt of Duration paint pretty easily; however, it can often require touching up if you need to get rid of tough stains. However, their matt sheen is pretty easy to clean.

Drying time

Painting can be a long and arduous process, especially if you have had to scrape a lot of paint beforehand. Most likely, you will need to apply at least a couple of coats (although Emerald can often produce a high-quality finish with one coat). The drying time is crucial because it determines how quickly you can apply a second coat and how quickly you can begin putting your room back together again.

Both of these paints have a drying time of between four to six hours, which is when the paint will be touch dry. Something to consider, though, is that as Duration has a softer film, it often dries quicker. This is a big advantage if you want to apply a second coat and have limited time or need to start moving your furniture back.

One thing to note about the drying time is that quicker isn’t always better. The reason for this is that if you have a large surface area to paint and you cut in at the edges first, this section can dry before you get there with the roller. This often has the effect of brush strokes showing on your finish which can spoil the room’s look.

Longevity

The final thing to consider when buying paint for your home is how long it is going to last before it needs to be touched up or completely redone. You don’t want to apply paint and have your kitchen or living room look fabulous if the whole process needs to be done again in 6 months.

Emerald paint tends to last a bit longer than Duration, and this is because Emerald isn’t as susceptible to dirt. The harder film of Emerald ensures that dirt and grime don’t cling to the paint as much, preventing it from breaking down and losing its appearance. Even though Duration paint is thicker, it tends to fade quicker, which means you need to repaint the area sooner than with Emerald.

Emerald is the better choice if you want to paint that will last longer and be less susceptible to losing its finish over time. However, this does depend on the room as Duration can be better suited to high-moisture environments.

What Is Sherwin Williams’s Most Popular Paint?

Between Sherwin Williams’ endless paint options, we found that their SuperPaint, Duration, and Emerald lines take the crown. Out of the three, SuperPaint is listed as their top-selling option on their website, followed closely by Duration and Emerald.

That said, reviews give Emerald the highest overall rating, so we would recommend that option of the three.

Is Sherwin Williams Paint Expensive?

Sherwin Williams paint does tend to cost more money than other brands. On average, a gallon of Sherwin Williams paint will cost you around $70, which is almost double the price of the average paint brand.

Of course, with a higher price tag does come better, longer-lasting paint, so we would say it is worth it.

Best Rooms for Sherwin Williams Contented SW 6191

Sherwin Williams Contented is very flexible and versatile in its use. You can use the paint color in various settings. Below, I will show you real-life pictures of places where Sherwin Williams Contented has been used:

Contented Sherwin Williams Exterior

Source:

Sherwin Williams Contented is an impressive color because it boasts a balanced lightness. When used outdoors—for example, in the house above—the paint holds its ground, displaying a perfect balance of green and gray.

As noted earlier, Contented works exceptionally well when trimmed with white colors. The above house uses this exact approach, creating a work of art.

Source:

This is another impressive use of Sherwin Williams Contented outdoors. Like the earlier house, this homeowner also pairs Contented with white trims to create an appealing look. In this case, the light seems slightly lower, making the color appear darker than it is typically.

This house presents a perfect opportunity for us to compare the extent to which Sherwin Williams Contented makes the house resemble something from nature. The green provided by the trees makes the house feel like part of this environment. The Contented paint color is impressively trimmed with White and has a dark gray on the roof, making it stand out.

Sherwin Williams Contented Cabinets

Source:

Sherwin Williams Contented stands out on cabinets. This is especially the case when whites or off-whites surround the paint color. In the above cabinets, Contented breaks the monotony that would have resulted if the cabinets were also white or off-white.

Source:

This is another perfect case of pairing Contented perfectly with off-whites and whites: the off-white and white colors blend perfectly with Contented on the cabinets. While the Contented SW 6191 does not create a significant difference, it ensures the Sherwin Williams Contented kitchen cabinets look the part.

Source:

The previous pictures have looked at Sherwin Williams Contented kitchen cabinets. The above image takes a different direction, with these cabinets sitting in the bathroom.

The cabinets blend in well with the whites in the room and the cream tiles in the ground. While the creamy tiles add some warmth, Contented brings a cool feeling ensuring the bathroom does not get too hot.

Sherwin Williams Contented Bathroom

Source:

Sherwin Williams Contented always pairs nicely with whites and off-whites in bathrooms, as evidenced by the picture above. While Contented sits pretty on the walls, the whites occupy every other part of the room, reflecting enough light into Contented, ensuring that the color has enough personality despite its low LRV.

Source:

Unlike the previous bathroom, which uses Contented on the walls and White on other decors, the roles are reversed in this bathroom. White sits on the walls while Sherwin Williams Contented sits on the cabinets. Still, the look is impressive enough and catches your eye at first look.

Source: Sherwin-williams

This bathroom clearly shows how Contented would look when used in the walls in a spacious bathroom. The bathroom above is not just big; it is also well-lit and seems to allow warm southern light. The light in the room makes Sherwin Williams lean more on the gray-green side, hiding the cool blue in it—it makes the paint color look less warm.

Interestingly, however, Sherwin Williams Contented, in this room, has been paired nicely with whites and off-whites. The room has a balanced feel that is extremely comfy.

Sherwin Williams Contented Living Room

Source: https://bit.ly/3BGghml

In this living room, light is enough, allowing the beauty hidden in Sherwin Williams Contented to shine through. Moreover, Contented is paired with off-whites and whites—these highly reflective colors allow light to bounce off them onto Sherwin Williams Contented, making it even more interesting.

Source: https://bit.ly/3WjnBfF

As noted earlier, Sherwin Williams Contented sits in the middle on the light reflectivity value scale. Therefore, ensure the room is well-lit if you do not want it to lose its hue and become dull.

The above room displays the appearance of Sherwin Williams Contented at night but in a well-lit room. Because of enough lighting, the paint color retains the same attractive look it had during the daytime.

Source: decorpad

This room demonstrates what happens when you put Sherwin Williams Contented in a softer light. While the paint color is gray-green by default, it seems to have taken a bluish appearance in this room. The softer light brings out the paint color’s cool blue tone. Regardless, the room has an excellent interior design where Contented is trimmed nicely with whites and off-whites.

How Many Coats Of Sherwin Williams Duration Paint Do I Need?

Typically, you shouldn’t need more than two coats of Duration to cover your walls. Of course, if your walls are very light in color, one coat should be sufficient.

Like Emerald, Duration paints also have a built-in primer, which will save you time prepping your walls.

Is Duration Paint Mildew Resistant?

For anyone living in a humid climate, yes, Duration paint is mildew resistant. According to the Sherwin Williams website, every product in their Duration line contains anti-microbial agents, which prevent mold and mildew from growing on your surfaces.

All Duration paint is moisture-resistant, which is great for anyone in a tropical or sub-tropical climate.

Sherwin Williams Tradewind Undertones

All paint colors have undertones. These are the little bits of color that help to make a shade what it is.

Now, Tradewind does have some green in it. It isn’t a true blue like a royal blue or anything, but it is solidly more blue than green, for sure.

The green in Tradewind helps make it a little bit more subtle than a shade like Sherwin Williams Sleepy Blue, which looks must more like a true blue.

Sherwin Williams Tradewind also has gray undertones. The gray in Tradewind is what gives it that sophisticated look.

Blue paint colors that don’t have any gray can look bright and juvenile, or pastel like an Easter egg. Tradewind isn’t any of these things.

Because Tradewind has a bit of gray in it, it looks elegant and mature.

Captivate

Sherwin-Williams Captivate Interior

Captivate is Sherwin-Williams’ most affordable paint. At only $45 per gallon, this interior-only paint is comparable to Benjamin Moore ben and Behr Ultra.

It’s a thinner paint that’s easy to apply and wash out of brushes, but with a low percentage of volume solids (34% for a flat finish), it won’t provide the best coverage or durability.

It’s ideal for rentals, investment properties, and low-traffic areas of your home, like a spare bedroom.

This paint is a good option if you don’t have kids or pets, but if your walls get scuffed often, it won’t last as long as the other options.

SHERWIN WILLIAMS SANDBAR 7547

Sandbar is a light-medium depth tan paint color, with an LRV of 53. And while it does have tans subtle undertones, they’re SUPER muted, and most of the time, Sandbar reads as a pretty simple neutral. For this reason, Sandbar can act more like a hybrid between the beige and tan worlds.

With non-white painted cabinets being trendy, colors like Sherwin Williams Sandbar, Balanced Beige, and Pashmina are showing up in my Instagram feed MUCH more often!

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SANDBAR

  • Sandbar’s super subtle green undertones could show up more in a room with western afternoon sunshine.
  • Sandbar could be a bit muddy and heavy for a dark room and is best suited to a room with average or more natural light.
  • Natural Tan is kind of like a lighter version of Sandbar if you want a softer approach (coming up next!)
  • Sandbar looks stunning with darker greige tones like Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze.

Our Go-To Painting Supplies

  • Paint brushes – I recommend ‘Pro Grade’ paint brushes, they’re the perfect budget friendly option. This set comes with both flat and angled brushes to get every nook and cranny. I LOVE the quality and, in my experience, they’re much more affordable from Amazon compared to in-store prices. You might be surprised how cheap this professional quality 5 Brush Set is on Amazon (it’s less than $10!).
  • Paint rollers – Cover more surface area with a handy roller.

It’s an excellent quality sprayer, and powers through any painting projects in a hurry. Painting with an airless sprayer makes it easy to complete projects in much less time.

  • Drop cloth – Skip the mess and grab a reusable drop cloth instead. This will come in handy for future projects. Just pop it in the washing machine after you’re done painting and it will be ready to go for the next project.
  • Multi-surface painter’s tape – I always use this brand of painter’s tape, it’s great for smooth or lightly textured walls, trim, baseboards, tile, or even glass. It sticks quick and is easy to remove.
  • Sanding sponges – For smoothing and prepping surfaces, you’ll need a couple of sanding sponges in different grits.
